The Australian Curriculum v9.0, Explained for Parents

The Australian Curriculum can look intimidating from the outside — pages of codes, descriptions and standards. But underneath, it's a tidy, logical structure, and once you can see the shape, planning and record-keeping get a great deal easier. Here's the whole thing in plain language.

Eight learning areas

From Foundation to Year 6, the curriculum spans eight learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), The Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education, and Languages. Together they describe the breadth of what children are expected to learn — and they're the categories most registration bodies expect to see covered.

Strands break each area into threads

Within each area are strands — the major threads. Mathematics, for example, runs across Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability. English is organised into Language, Literature and Literacy. Strands help you check whether you're covering an area broadly or accidentally over-focusing on one slice (lots of arithmetic, no measurement; lots of comprehension, no writing).

Content descriptions and codes

A content description states what students learn at a given year level. Each carries a unique code — like AC9M3N01 — that encodes the version (AC9), the learning area (M for Maths), the year (3), the strand (N for Number) and the item number. You never need to memorise these; they're simply a precise way to point at a specific outcome.

  • You don't teach to the code — you teach the idea; the code is just the label.
  • Codes make record-keeping and re-registration far simpler.
  • Good resources tag lessons with codes so your coverage is visible at a glance.
  • Each description also comes with 'elaborations' — optional examples of how it might be taught. Ideas, not requirements.

Achievement standards: the 'typical by year's end' line

Each year level has an achievement standard describing what a student can typically do by the end of it. Treat it as a guide for pacing and expectations, not a pass/fail gate. Children move through different areas at different speeds — a child can be 'Year 5' in reading and 'Year 3' in spelling, and that's completely normal. Teach the child in front of you, and use the standard as a horizon, not a fence.

General capabilities: the skills woven through everything

Beyond subject content, the curriculum names general capabilities that cut across all areas: literacy, numeracy, digital literacy, critical and creative thinking, personal and social capability, ethical understanding and intercultural understanding. You don't timetable these — they show up naturally when a child plans an experiment, debates a point, or works through a frustration. It's worth knowing they exist so you can notice and nurture them.

Cross-curriculum priorities

Three priorities are designed to be woven through learning where relevant: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures; Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia; and Sustainability. These aren't separate subjects — they're lenses you bring into existing topics (studying Country in geography, Asian neighbours in HASS, sustainable design in Technologies).

Putting it to work: a simple yearly map

You don't need a 40-page scope-and-sequence. Try this:

  • List the eight learning areas down a page.
  • For each, jot the strands you want to touch this year.
  • Choose resources that align to v9.0 so outcomes can be ticked as you go.
  • Each term, glance back and fill any obvious gaps next term.
Use the curriculum as a checklist for breadth and a compass for direction — never as a stopwatch.

Evidencing coverage without drowning in admin

When it's time to show what you've done, a curriculum-tagged record does the heavy lifting: a log of completed lessons with their codes, a handful of work samples per area, and a short reflection on progress. That's usually more than enough — and it's a by-product of simply teaching, not a second job.
